Apply to be part of the United Nations UNOPS Youth Engagement Platform(Fully-funded)

In the lead-up to the Summit of the Future, UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services) is taking a significant step to incorporate the voices of the global youth into the dialogue surrounding multilateralism and sustainable development. Recognizing the importance of youth perspectives, UNOPS has established the Youth Engagement Platform, an innovative advisory group designed to drive the organization’s efforts toward the 2030 Agenda.

Introducing the UNOPS Youth Platform: “30 Below 30, to Get 2030”

The UNOPS Youth Platform operates under the guiding principle of “30 Below 30, to Get 2030.” This initiative seeks to harness the energy, creativity, and expertise of young leaders from around the world to help shape UNOPS’ contributions to sustainable development. By fostering collaboration, innovation, and strategic guidance, the platform aims to co-create impactful solutions with UNOPS and its partners, advancing the 2030 Agenda for a more sustainable and equitable future.

Purpose and Goals

The primary goal of the UNOPS Youth Platform is to integrate youth-centric and intergenerational perspectives into the organization’s strategic initiatives. As the world faces evolving challenges, the platform will play a pivotal role in advising UNOPS on new approaches to sustainable development, ensuring that the voices of future generations are at the forefront of global decision-making.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Shaping UNOPS Contributions: The platform will contribute to UNOPS’ involvement in the Summit of the Future by providing youth-centric insights and solutions.
  • Informing Future Strategies: The insights gained through this youth engagement will guide UNOPS in setting future strategic priorities and initiatives.

Composition and Selection

The UNOPS Youth Platform will consist of 30 young leaders under the age of 30, with a minimum age requirement of 17. These individuals will serve for a one-year term, which may be renewed at UNOPS’ discretion based on the outcomes of the Summit of the Future.

Selection Process:

  • Internal Representation: Fifteen members will be selected from within UNOPS personnel, ensuring a diverse representation of intersecting identities, including geographic location, race/ethnicity, disability, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
  • External Representation: Fifteen members will be selected externally, representing a wide range of backgrounds, expertise, and geographic locations. While experience in infrastructure, procurement, project management, and grants management is advantageous, it is not mandatory. The selection process will prioritize diversity to ensure a broad range of perspectives.

Selected members should demonstrate a passion for sustainable development through various experiences, including academic, professional, research, volunteer, or community involvement. UNOPS highly values the unique perspectives of individuals from historically underrepresented and marginalized communities.

Roles and Responsibilities

Members of the UNOPS Youth Platform will:

  • Advise UNOPS: Reflect the global youth’s perspective and serve as a resource for UNOPS on sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda.
  • Provide Input: Offer insights on emerging challenges and opportunities, drawing from diverse experiences and expertise.
  • Collaborate on Solutions: Work with UNOPS teams to develop innovative solutions and approaches supporting the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Act as Ambassadors: Represent UNOPS at external events and engagements, advocating for sustainable development.

Governance and Support

The platform will be overseen by a UNOPS steering committee, with support from designated focal points across the organization. The group will convene twice annually, with an in-person meeting in May and a virtual meeting in November. The inaugural meeting is scheduled for early September in Copenhagen, ahead of the Summit of the Future.

To support the platform’s work, UNOPS will establish a Secretariat responsible for providing relevant data, organizing meetings, and offering resources as needed. While members will volunteer their time and expertise on a pro-bono basis, UNOPS will cover travel and accommodation expenses for the annual in-person meeting.

Reporting

The platform will provide an annual brief to the UNOPS Executive Director, summarizing key recommendations and outcomes from its meetings and engagements. This report will help guide UNOPS in its future efforts to engage with youth and drive sustainable development initiatives.

Through the establishment of the Youth Engagement Platform, UNOPS is taking a significant step toward integrating youth voices into global discussions on sustainable development. By empowering young leaders, UNOPS aims to ensure that the challenges and opportunities of multilateralism are addressed with a forward-looking, inclusive perspective that prioritizes the needs of future generations.
